We're so excited to introduce this single origin ground ginger to you. Our partner cooperative in Zanzibar wanted to start growing organic ginger but had never done it before. So we stepped in, guaranteed that we'd buy the entire crop at a fair price - and we're so glad we did.
This very spicy Tanga Ginger comes from a coastal region of Tanzania, on the Indian Ocean, and is so iconic that the name forms the root for the Swahili word for ginger, tangawizi. In Tanzania, ginger is used in rice, soups, and even ice cream. It’s also been used for medicinal purposes - to calm upset stomachs, restore appetite, and support the immune system. Any way you slice it, this is a beautiful, potent, and organically-grown ginger.

Process: Sun-dried, then ground

This ginger comes from the Tanga region on the northeastern coast of Tanzania, where it grows organically. Ginger is a rhizhome (Greek for “mass of roots”) that grows slightly below the surface of the ground. Once it’s harvested, it’s washed in cold water, then sliced by hand. The ginger slices are dried in the sun before being ground with the skin still on.
