You Gotta Burn To Turn...why I wish I hadn't followed that summertime motto

Raise your hand if you are a sun worshiper?  My motto in my 20's was, "you gotta burn to turn".  Little did I know the long term damage it could create.

As I continue to educate myself on the safest and most effective sunscreen for myself and family, I thought I would share what I have learned.  Since my husband spends every day outside for his business, he is my official "tester" as we look at bringing in some of the best products into the store.  If you currently have tried any of the brands with links towards the end of this article, we would love your feedback and recommendations.

What's the scoop on Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) and why we should avoid it:

UV is an invisible light emitted from the sun and can be very harmful.  When choosing a sunscreen, make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB (broad-spectrum).

  • Ultraviolet A (long wave radiation) penetrates deep into the skin and causes skin aging, and damage to immune system.  UVA gets emitted during all hours of the day and can even penetrate through glass and clouds.
  • Ultraviolet B (middle wave radiation) stays primarily superficial to skin and causes sunburn, redness, and also plays a key role in skin cancer .  Unlike UVA, the intensity of UVB can vary by season, time, and location. The highest amounts in the US are during 10AM-4PM from April-October. (source)
  • Ultraviolet C (short wave radiation).  This UV is filtered by the ozone and (from what I found) does not contribute to skin damage...yet...(which is another reason why protecting the ozone layer is so important)

Types of Sunscreens:

  • Mineral based (key ingredients: zinc oxide and Titanium Oxide)-these products block and/or reflect the UV rays.
  • Non-mineral based (derived from chemicals)-these products absorb or dissipate UV rays

Ingredients in sunscreens I am choosing to avoid this summer due to endocrine disruption, skin sensitivity, and/or environmental damage to coral  (source):

What are my options for the safest sunscreen?

EWG has done all the hard work in researching and analyzing some of the best, but ultimately, its what works best for you and your family based on price point and usage.  Click on each below for more information:

I currently have my husband trying out Goddess Garden.

Thanks so much for reading.  I hope you found it useful.

Cheers-
